Good afternoon ATLanteans!
It's been a busy week here in Reno as we prepare to depart on Monday for
Black Rock City. We have been working hard scheduling, planning,
communicating with our teams, preparing equipment and vehicles, staging gear
for load-in, gathering tools and supplies and trying to cover all the bases.
Please read through this entire update as there is a lot of important
details which will help you get acquainted with camp and ensure you don't
miss out.
Seeking Volunteers
Those incredible people who help us pre and post event are worth their
weight in gold. I can't begin to convey to you the valuable contribution you
give to this project by helping us with the various aspect of setup and tear
down. Thank you for being part of making this happen!
Pre-event: We are asking for help this Saturday and Sunday in Reno to help
load the cargo vehicles that will transport all our infrastructure. If you
can help out this weekend please let us know.
End of event: The Sunday after Man Burn we are asking everyone camping at
ATL to help us breakdown structures. This would be taking apart the Crystal
Cavern, the Tea House, and the common area and staging the gear in one
location so we can load it into the trucks. We are asking YOU to give us at
least two hours of your time to assist with breakdown. Our team leads will
be available to guide you during breakdown so you don't waste your time
unnecessarily. Sunday we will need a bunch of folks working together to
help take down the dome. It's a great group project and excellent team
building exercise. The more people we have the faster it comes apart.
We need for a few good souls who can help us after the end of the event on
Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Tuesday on playa we will be loading the
vehicles, then on Wednesday driving to the ranch, the year round storage
location, to unload the equipment. It's a straight shot down Pyramid Hwy to
the ranch. Post-event is when we need the most help. We will have a
post-Burning Man party at the house in Reno for everyone who volunteers to
lend a hand at ranch. Believe me we are going to be treating ourselves well
at that after party. Oh, yeah.
Material Donation Please
Pillow Cases: Feel like you want to contribute more to the project? There
is a lot of expensive fabric and lighting which needs protection. Please
bring any old pillow cases you may have so that we can wrap tapestries and
lights in them.
Table: We need two tables for the alters. Seeking round or square tables
which are 3-4 feet high. We need to put something under alter so there
should be space under the table and between the legs about 18 inches wide.
If you have a table you can lend please let email kaya at psyreal.net or Waza
ah at well.com.
White LED lights: We are in need of white LED lights for the Tea House to
give it that ethereal glow worthy of the oasis in the desert we are
manifesting. LED only please as they put less strain on the power grid.
Who the heck is camping next to me?
Camp social will be Wednesday between 4pm and 6 pm at the Lounge. The
Lounge is our common are for all of ATL campers where we can share meals,
retreat from windstorms or rain, get warm, get cool, have meetings, do
crafts, or whatever else strikes your fancy. The Lounge will be located
centrally within the private camping area. Feel free to bring a yummy dish
to share.
Edison Would be Proud
This year we will have a 20,000 watt generator and are able to supply power
to you, whether it's the A/C unit you managed to shove into your tent or to
the shore power for your RV. As you might imagine these generators are not
cheap and we are asking you help us out on the expense. If you are camping
alone we are asking for $10, in a pod of tents $40, RV's are $125. We aren't
picking on RV's because are jealous. I mean we are jealous but that isn't
why it costs more. The air conditioner and other appliances in RV's demand a
lot of power and that translates to burning more fuel hence the greater
cost. But when you are sit in front of that cool air it is so worth it. We
are asking folks to please pay that power fee this week if possible. If you
can't use PayPal please email kaya at psyreal.net

Where Are My Friends Camping?
Knowing where your friends are camping with in Black Rock City at just got a
lot easier. This is a very cool app and I can't believe it wasn't done
years ago. Burnermap.com <http://burnermap.com/> is great tool that will
connect you with all those people you said you would find on playa but never
do. The only downside is you have to have a Facebook account in order to use
Burnermap. Not on Facebook? Don't worry, at least you still have a good
excuse for not tracking down your friends while enjoying the rock star
lifestyle of Burning Man.
To find your friends inside of ATL we will post a map inside the Lounge
directing you to their residence.
MOOP
We are required to submit a Leave No Trace (LNT) plan with our theme camp
application. Part of LNT is having a procedures in place for taking care of
waste. In 2010 Above The Limit won a the distinction of being a model Leave
No Trace camp , and we're trying again for 2011. Please help us out in
being as playa-friendly as possible
Matter Out of Place (aka trash) makes more work for the cleanup crew when
you have already gone home. The entire camp gets graded (yep, just like in
school) on how well we pick up after ourselves. Please pick up any MOOP no
matter how small. Left even briefly MOOP can become buried, then like
landmines this MOOP turns up later during the line sweep causing us to get a
bad grade. Grades matter because there is no GED option at Black Rock High.
The grade we get factors into many considerations next year like where we
get placed. You don't want to be the one who flunked LNT because then they
stick you next to the port-o-potties the following year.
I'm pleased to say that our camp should be producing very little waste we
will be using wood and paper products which can burned in place of plastic
plates and cups. We ask that you share the responsibility of waste removal
by picking up trash whenever possible, keeping your trash bags secured and
out of the wind, do a sweep of your entire camping area during the weekend
and thorough sweep after you pack up. We may ask you to take a small bag of
trash with you when you leave so that we can distribute the load and reduce
the burden on any one person. We don't expect much if any but please reserve
a little space when packing up to accommodate a small bag. Bring a rigid
rake if possible in order to rake through the dirt to find hidden MOOP.
Here's a great article about Leave No Trace

We're almost home!
