Camp Above The Limit Update – 14 October 2011

Greetings everyone!

It’s hard to believe that just six weeks ago we were all out on the playa
under a hot summer sun.

Thank you all for your contributions to that adventure. We had a terrific
camp of more than seventy people who built large structures and ambitious
art projects. As Camp Above The Limit, we created the Crystal Cavern dance
space, the Saraswati Tea House and Café Kona. We hosted the Saraswati
Speaker Series and a group of DJs. This communiqué takes a look at what went
into Above The Limit in 2011 and the people who made it all happen.

ATL 2011 Credits – Thank You All!

What did it take to put on ATL in 2011? Here’s acknowledgement and thanks
to all those who actively participated. If we are missing anyone, our
apologies. You know who you are and the contributions you made, and we

Reflections

Despite the geographical, spiritual, and people challenges of building a
large camp, we created some real playa magic out there. The debut of the
Saraswati Tea House was a triumph. The Crystal Cavern’s Tuesday night
performance raised the bar to a whole new level. Café Kona’s addition of
the giant latte and espresso machine added new ways to revitalize
participants. Our artwork and stickers are appreciated everywhere.

Funding the camp has always been a real challenge, but we did the best job
in our seven-year history with our budget in 2011 with only a small overall
loss. Historically, camp dues have never covered more than 30% of total
cash outlays. Special thanks to our donors and all of you who paid camp dues
that generated the needed cash for putting it all together and making it
happen.

While some camps have ultra efficient paid professional set-up teams (and
six-digit camp budgets), our volunteer crew rose to the occasion. As anyone
who has worked Build Week knows, there’s a lot of hard work in the hot sun
and during cold nights, and not everything ever goes completely according to
the hopes and plans. Take down is usually even more challenging, as a huge
amount of work has to be done in very little time. In complete contrast to
2010, where eight of our take-down crew bailed leaving Phoenix, Fallout,
Angelica, and Twilight to load and dispatch over 60,000 pounds of gear
during two around-the-clock days of white-out (thank you forever for those
best-forgotten hours), the 2011 take down was the best ever in terms of many
people participating and making it happen. Thank you!

Sadly, we didn’t quite clean everything up the way we should have, and we
ended up with red hotspots on the MOOP map at the site of the Crystal Cavern
and behind the Tea House. We’ll investigate to find out what was left
behind.

Feedback from all of you about the camp experience has been overwhelmingly
positive. We also received tremendously positive feedback from our visiting
participants. In addition to making a major contribution to Black Rock
City, we managed to have fun and welcomed many hundreds of guests. Above
all, we made lasting friendships with an awesome group of people. Sincere
thanks to everyone who brought their strength and creativity to this
project.

We will keep you posted about what we’re considering for the playa next
year. In the meantime, we wish you all a restful autumn and a joyful new
year.

The Man burns in 323 Days
