Dear Friends of the Tea House,

For those of you joining us at Burning Man this year, we hope that your pre-playa logistics are proceeding smoothly. Here at Tea House HQ high above Haight-Ashbury, we are busy washing teacups and taking inventory. The Burn will be our sixth major Tea House event of the summer. We will be transporting the Saraswati Tea House to Reno on August 19th and arriving on the playa with our build crew the next day. If you are planning to be on the playa during build week, come join us for our private tea party. Some of our Tea Servers are also offering rides to the Burn from Portland, Albuquerque, Las Vegas and other locations. Let us know if you need a lift.

The Tea House will be located at Camp Above the Limit at 9:15 and B near the 9:00 plaza. We will open the Tea House to the public at 6 pm, Sunday, August 26 when the gates open. We will stop serving on Monday, September 3rd at 6 am. We are asking Tea House volunteers to please serve at least two shifts during the Burn. We will run four, six-hour shifts a day from midnight to 6 am, 6 am to noon, noon to 6 pm and 6 pm to midnight. Here’s a link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiGJ8nJMUXcRdDFYcG44bzJ0UDJnck93Y2diZTR6a1E to the ATL2012-Online Camp Planner where you can sign up for shifts. Select the Activities and Shift view to see the current schedule for the Tea House.

Please consider signing up for a shift later in the week that still needs servers. If you have friends attending the Burn who you think would enjoy serving in the Tea House, please let us know and we will contact them. We need a crew of at least fifty people to be able to stay open 24/7 throughout the Burn. We have also set aside several Burning Man tickets for friends of friends who want to camp with us and serve in the Tea House. Tickets will be sold at face value. You must personally vouch for anyone purchasing one of these tickets as they are part of our internal camp ticket exchange. Please get in touch if you know a potential tea server who needs a ticket and is willing to describe in twenty words why they want to serve in the Tea House with us.

If you have room in your vehicle, please consider bringing a few items that we need for the Tea House this year. We are seeking more oriental rugs to cover the floor, tea trays and throw pillows if you have them. We are also looking for tapestries for the tent walls and items for our altars. If you have some good ambient music mixes on your iPod, please bring them too. Donate an extra ten gallons of water if you can. Most of all, we need your good energy, your kindness, your stamina, and your willingness to be completely present with guests who come seeking a place to rest, rehydrate and ground themselves. We will be holding space while pouring some fine pu-erh and herbal infusions, including our tulsi rose house blend, damiana and jiaogulan, the herb of immortality.

Senior Tea House volunteers will hold several training sessions for tea servers at noon on Tuesday, August 28th and Wednesday, August 29th. Tea Servers are also invited to take part in the training offered by the Zendo, a sister project organized by our friends at MAPS at a time to be determined. We will have a daily information meeting at the Tea House at 10 am for those who wish to join us. Come drink pu-erh with the Tea House posse and you will meet some very interesting people.

Finally, we have been warned that there will be exceptionally dry and dusty conditions on the playa this year. Don’t forget your goggles, dust mask, scarves and a bike with fat tires. As we did last year, we plan to pack up our gear and serve tea at some of the more remote art installations. No matter what the weather, we will be emailing updates off the playa when we arrive on site. The Tea House opens in 13 days. We look forward to serving with you.

With love,

Veeta and the Tea House Crew
