Now that cooler nights are upon us, wild mushrooms are beginning to appear all over the Fair Site. Shaggy mane (Coprinus comatus) is one of the most recognizable of all edible mushrooms, so much so that it is even said that it can be easily identified from a fast moving automobile. Often seen in fields, lawns, or pastures---they can be scattered, grouped, or in dense clusters. These particularly handsome little fellows are growing right out of the driveway by the Warehouse. Choice shaggy manes are delicate and should be picked young and eaten the same day---before the caps can turn inky. Saute and season with nutmeg or garlic. |
