Faerie Forest Flower

Trillium grandiflorum: also known as the Grand Trillium, Wood Lily, or Great Flowered Trillium. This is the largest and best-known of the trillium genus and arguably the quintessential wildflower. The Fair Site is graced with many thousands of these during the Spring and its distintive shape makes it instantly recognizable. Tri means three in Latin, and it is obvious why this plant is so named: it has three sepals, three leaves, and three petals. After the flower dies, a black fruit develops. Ants take the fruit to their dens and eat it, but the discard the seeds underground, thus propogating the plant. Never pick any wildflower, but especially not this one. Because the plant and flower are so tall that if the bulb is detached from the leaves, it causes the death of a plant that has taken several years to mature to blooming.
