Hi Devon et al,
Yes, in previous years we’ve had a very large and complex evap system that was for communal use, and we had showers. (We also had dues twice what this year’s are.) This year, we’re a bit more focused on radical self-reliance, as we have not had enough volunteers to do what we did last year.
Annie/WallahVeeta has noted Patrick’s contribution of the evap pond.
This year—and DarkStar, please correct me if I’m mistaken—my understanding is that we will not have showers, leastwise outside of private RVs. We will not have community water facilities, but we will have a communal kitchen area/commissary/eating area in the member’s area of the camp. We will not have camp cooking equipment (stoves, propane), nor will we have camp washing up facilities, so be sure to bring your own gear for that or arrange with someone else.
We *may* have a small amount of refrigeration capacity for a nominal charge. If you’re interested, please contact DarkStar or me.
We also may have a spare Costco Barn or two if anyone wants additional lodging space for $100 each. These are 10’ x 20’ x 9’ fully-enclosed carports that make great private dwelling areas. They take about an hour to assemble and another hour to take down. If you’re interested, please contact me. (As with any structures, if you’re bringing any of your own, please contact DarkStar.)
If anyone is willing to come to Reno and recondition and transport bicycles, we can offer bicycles to camp members. We have about 15 out at the ranch, but we do not have enough of us in Reno to get them in shape for the event.
If anyone on the list would like to bring showers, water is available for purchase in Gerlach en route to the event. In bulk, it’s 40 cents per gallon. If you bring showers, though, please note that unless you have a grey water evap system, you’ll be responsible for trucking the water off the playa.
No drainage of water onto the playa is permitted, and that includes residual ice and water from coolers at the end of the event. Your take-down crew has to break up any resulting clods of playa at the end of the event to leave no trace, and it’s really not a fun thing to do.
And as DarkStar mentioned, we have an awesome 25KW generator in camp this year. If you’re interested in power, please email her to arrange it.
If you have any guy wires associated with your structure, please make sure that the wires are illuminated at night with glow, blinkies, or other bright shiny objects.
And one more thing that you’ll hear again before the event: rebar is critical for securing structures on the playa. As I’m sure you already know from memorizing our camp FAQ http://www.campabovethelimit.com/faq.html , there’s a section on securing your structures http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/securing.html that is required reading for anyone with a structure other than a car, RV, or trailer. During take-down last year, we had the dubious distinction of setting the record for Costco Barn flying – ¼ mile. While it can be humorous to watch a tent blow downrange until it’s caught on something – think along the lines of Dorothy’s house in the twister – we’d prefer not to have that happen in our own camp this year. For Costco barns, that means a minimum of four pieces of rebar per barn, each of which is attached to the barn via a ratchet strap.
Any other questions about infrastructure? Please post them to the list!
The Man burns in 26 days!
Cheers,

Devon,
This is a very good question. We are encouraging individuals and the groups they camp with within ATL (pods as we call them) to be self sufficient. Because of limited volunteer availability, time and financial support we are unable to build and maintain many common structures this year such as a communal evap pond or communal kitchen space.
This email list exists to help you connect with your fellow camp members. Please use it to reach out others in order to collaborate on projects like a shared evap pond. I know there are at least two individuals who are building their own mini-pond. If you are interested in helping them build something larger as a shared resource please let the list know and perhaps you can all work together to make something.
The water delivery team that deals with water sales and grey water disposal had a reservation online and via Jack Rabbit Speaks announced months ago that everyone should reserve by the end of July their water/waste needs. The service is now over capacity, over booked and they have halted reservations. Demand has been so high they had to announce that they will refuse flag down service on playa by camps or individuals without an existing reservation.
There are some common resources we are planning though. You have the option of having access to electricity from the 25,000 watt generator which will be powering camp. While we are asking that you pay for use of power to help cover the rental and fuel expense it is a modest fee. Also, we will have a common area which shall be large enclosed space intended for camp members and not the public. This will be a place we can gather for meals, hide from dust storms, get warm, relax, and have meetings.

ATL,
I was wondering if we had come to a consensus on our grey water/shower evaporation situation? Will we have a collective camp system, or are we going to have to provide individual systems for ourselves if we so choose?
I know much has changed since last year, and I just want to be clear on what to expect and what to bring.
See you in the dust!
