Burning Man IT Crew Notes

Summary of follow-up tasks

  • publish wiki, Done
  • "recipe" for ideal node to re-broadcast 5Ghz AirMAX signal to local "internet cafes"
  • Make PCEngines/Soekris image for ESD & BO router with ath support
  • patch for 802.11 NAV setting (alternative to CTS/RTS) for AP non-AirMax nodes
  • patch isc-dhcp to send multiple responses instead of typical 1
  • research cone vs. symmetric NAT (looks like pf is symmetric; use same initially allocated port/IP tuple)
  • research 802.1q 802.1d support (ebtables has --vlan-prio option, usable?)
  • research iwconfig Ubiquti data rate setting (don't offer 1, 2, 5.5Mbps in bitmap for beacons)
  • Ethereal patch to see timeline display of different data rates by time
  • Network optimizations:
    • URL as SSID network name instead of captive portal (ie: www.playa)
    • Week long DHCP leases
    • single NAT router, multiple DHCP servers
    • disable lower data rates
    • ebtables on AP's to filter all broadcast traffic but ARP and DHCP
    • use $GENERATE zone macro for RFC1918 allocations in BIND
    • DNS-SD for Bonjour http://www.dns-sd.org/ServerSetup.html
