Hi Brian, All,
I have stopped development of this pending Beta testers. Since I made
the last release I did some beta-testing myself and have some
unpublished improvements, but really need people with Windows Vista and
Windows 7 machines to give the pack a go so that we can knock the
corners off it.
If there is some problem with downloading the pack please let me know
and I can try to rectify the problem. Clearly the standard engines only
help stabilise the CGOS rating system during the periods that you kind
people are running the engines. I have been busy recently, but whenever
I've checked in, nobody else has been running them. I have perhaps done
something wrong in preparing the pack that I've put almost all of you
off form using it. I do apologise.
I fully believe that there is a desire to strengthen the CGOS ranking
system by the presence of standard engines, because several of you
contributed valuable ideas. Don has kindly changed the way the server
works to allow us to do this, but I think I have let you down and
produced a pack that is not being used. Whilst I'm writing this e-mail,
I hope to ask what the main reasons are that people aren't using the
engines? Here are some ideas I've had, but please do tell me why you
personally would rather not donate some of your computing resources to
running the engine pack:
1) I don't have easy access to any Windows machines that I could run the
standard engine pack on
2) I am concerned that my hardware will not be able to cope with running
the standard engines - not enough attention has been paid to ensuring it
will run on slower hardware
3) The pack doesn't include my favourite engine
4) I want to download the "Heavy" engines, but don't have a 7-zip client
and don't know where to get one
5) I hadn't realised that nobody was running the pack, I had hoped that
somebody else would run it - please tell me how I can help
6) The packs are too big - my internet connection won't handle the size
of download you have created
7) Not all of the engines are open source - I like to read the source
code of any application I run on my machine
8) It is not straightforward enough to download and run the pack - I
don't have enough time - could you make it easier?
9) Other (please state)
Thanks in advance for any feedback, and apologies again (especially to
Don) for not providing you guys with a usable solution.
Raffles
PS whilst I am e-mailing may I say what a great privilege it is to read
everyone's comments on this list - a hugely valuable group, thanks!
